Holistically Dedicated To The Rescue, Rehoming Or Sanctuary Of Rottweilers
Natural
Remedies ~ a choice you can live with!
In loving memory of Buddy 14.5 or 15.5 years old.
The Power of the Dog (excerpts) ~ Rudyard Kipling
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Buddy was seized from a hoarder at 9-10 years of age, kept in a crate where he was bent double and about half of his healthy weight.
The Court ordered Buddy released to Happy Tails. That smile never left his face and he was famous for his Buddy-Butt-Dance-and Prance. Buddy wasn't sick, he simply out lived his body and passed gently into the spirit world, where there are no crates.
Because of Buddy's former circumstances he didn't want any dog competition and had true dog to dog aggression but was sweet as sugar with people. He spent his natural life with Happy Tails and has been returned to the earth. A vocal boy to the end, we were lucky to share his time.

It's really easy just go to the bottom of the page and start typing below where it asks: Do You Have A Great Natural Health Story About Your Animals?
It seems a favorite trick of some insurance companies is to dump homeowners if they have particular breeds of dogs, even though the dog isn't guilty of anything, other than his racial profile. It's important to review your homeowner or renter's policy to see if you have protection against dog inflicted injuries.
The last time we checked, State Farm Insurance did not discriminate against breeds. Here is some helpful information by an attorney regarding insurance.
NOTE: This is excerpted from a well note Vet's newsletter.
"I have to tell you about a life-threatening disease that I absolutely hate. It comes on very quickly - and to young healthy dogs. Many dogs get it and more than 50% of dogs that get it die. It is awful. No one knows exactly why it happens. I wish there was a cure but there is not."
"The disease is called immune mediated hemolytic anemia and it is caused by some abnormality in the dog's immune system. The body's immune system normally helps keep us healthy by killing bad bacteria. But for some reason with this disease it suddenly identifies healthy red blood cells in the body as foreign "bad" cells - and it starts destroying them."
"This disease is really awful. Over the course of sometimes hours, a dog can become weak and lethargic. Sometimes the dog will vomit. The gums become pale as the dog becomes anemic from losing the red blood cells in its body. Treatment of this disease is difficult and expensive. You can give the dog blood transfusions but the body will often destroy the transfused cells too. Sometimes transfusions are necessary but they are not a cure."
"The other treatment is drug therapy to suppress the immune system. Drugs will work for some dogs but not all. It is very frustrating."
A holistic perspective on the "But for some reason" noted above in red
It may come as a surprise to you that not all vets recommend vaccines, in fact, more and more ethical and well informed vets never vaccinate. They will use Titer testing as an alternative because of the known health dangers associated with vaccinations. All vets can write health exemptions for any vaccine, including rabies.
The simple fact is that un-vacccinated animals live longer, healthier and happier lives, as noted by Buddy above. Hera is 15.5 years old and just yesterday she was out trotting around, with a few energetic bursts of short gallops!
It breaks our hearts when we see animals dying younger and younger and know how easily, in most cases, that can be prevented. The two causes, we believe, to be contributory for these tragic diseases and deaths are vaccines and toxins in most commercial dog foods, and that goes for people too.
You may also be interested in knowing that vets, and medical doctors, obtain a fee for each vaccine and pharmaceutical that they suggest for their clients. In other words, they have a strong financial incentive to recommend what we consider to be known toxins to their clients.
There are some excellent holistic vets who do not put their financial interests ahead of your animals health.
Most don't know or understand how your body responds when vaccine pathogens, cultured in decaying tissue of both animal and human origin, coupled with any combination of synthetic ingredients are injected into your body.
Many doctors & vets have attributed the current epidemic of auto-immune diseases and cancers to the experimental injection of vaccines. An autoimmune disease is defined as any disease that is characterized by abnormal functioning of the immune system that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against your own tissues.
If vaccome ingredients aren't scary enough there is more. Many of the vaccines use attenuated vaccines which are a live but weakened form of a pathogenic virus, such as Swine flu, Kennel Cough, Parvo, Rabies etc. Attenuated vaccines can be particularly deadly.
When a vaccine containing a live virus is injected into a person or animal, the viral organism moves through the body with the potential of infecting the host and then exits through the feces, mucus membranes, sweat & saliva glands of the infected person or animal, thus potentially spreading the disease and causing the disease that the vaccine was designed to prevent. This is called Virus Shedding and can last for weeks and in some cases months.
GoodSearch.com for "attenuated vaccines" for more information.
Who would really want to risk their health, or their animals health, by injecting attenuated vaccines into their bloodstream in the hope it will immunize them?
American Animal Hospital Association
Canine Vaccine Task Force 2003 Canine Vaccine Guidelines
"Current knowledge supports the statement that no vaccine is always safe, no vaccine is always protective and no vaccine is always indicated."
In a research study published in 1996, the authors looked at a deadly canine disease of a confused immune system. Known as immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), it means the dogs' immune systems attacked their own red blood cells as if they were foreign. Needless to say, this is life challenging and the death rate is high, as one cannot live long without the oxygen-carrying red blood cells.
This is the exact disease that the vet newsletter mentioned. So why doesm't that vet know about a study done 15 years earlier?
In the study, 58 dogs with the illness, presenting at a veterinary teaching hospital over a two year period, were compared to a control group presenting for other problems over the same time. The question was asked.
"Did anything precede the onset of IMHA?" Lo and behold, a highly statistically significant group of the sick dogs had been vaccinated with the usual yearly vaccines one month earlier.
It was so significant that the authors entitled their paper. "Vaccine Associated Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia in the Dog." (Duval and Giger, J Vet Intern Med 1996;10:290-295)
It's Happy Tails sad experience that it most often follows a single Rabies vaccination. One of our beautiful Rotti girls was adopted to a wonderful holistic person who used an alleged holistic vet.
This vet intimiated her into giving a single Rabies vaccine. Two months later Stella was dying.
That was years ago, and only through extensive, herbal, homeopathic and other natural remedies is Stella alive today. She continues to have ups and downs periodically, but otherwise, is gorgeous, energetic and lucky to be alive. Stella enjoys an organic raw and cooked diet, including raw goat milk.
Had she been taken to most vets, they wouldn't have associated her auto immune disorder with the Rabies vaccine, even though there was thorough research dating from 1996.
Don't Eat Non Organic Potatoes
Jeffrey Moyer, chair of the National Organic Standards Board, gives us the scoop:
The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes, the nation's most popular vegetable, they're treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they're dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting.
"Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won't," says Moyer, who is also farm director of
the Rodale Institute. "I've talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals."
Happy Tails suggests a trip to the Yakima Valley, go directly to the farms for delicious, organic potatoes by the box!
In this article, written in December 2007, F. William Engdahl comments that, "when Gates, Rockefeller and Agribusiness get together on a project, it is prudent to take notice. If past deeds are any indicator, those who have taken it upon themselves to locate and store seeds in this secure facility are not benevolent servants of humanity, nor the preservers of life."
"On this God forsaken island Bill Gates is investing tens of his millions along with the Rockefeller Foundation, Monsanto Corporation, Syngenta Foundation and the Government of Norway, among others, in what is called the "doomsday seed bank." Officially the project is named the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, part of the Svalbard island group."
When Happy Tails Humans first learned of this 4 years ago, it got me thinking about the politics of the Green Revolution and Global Warming. Don't get me wrong, I pride myself on benig a good steward of the natural environment, eat organic or locally, naturally grown foods, drink raw milk and all of our animals are also cared for naturally.
My interests are aroused when the biggest of the big boys start chanting certain mantras, yet seem to behave exactly the opposite of how they would have we "masses" behave.
As a result my conclusions, based on years of scientific research, papers & journals, are not aligned with conventional wisdom. If you do a search on some of the names & places in this article you'll find dozens of possibilities for gathering bits and pieces of information. Google, may not be your most unbiased source for searching.

Doc's Valentine Card
Doc sent me a Valentine's Day card, wasn't he sweet? The card didn't have room to credit all of the people that rescued him and his Rotti house mate, Dino. So, I'll thank them here.
A little more than a year ago in the fall of 2009, I got a call from someone in California, she was distressed. Her father had not been seen in the neighborhood for a couple of weeks and people were concerned. Everyone liked the 2 Rotties that he used to walk daily.
Someone eventually checked on her father and discovered that he had died at home, with his 2 Rotts inside the house with him.
I can only imagine the stress, fear, hunger and thirst that they must have endured during that time. They were taken to a shelter while the daughter made arrangements to fly up and tend to affairs.
Happy Tails agreed to take both dogs, but we needed them neutered first. Pam, a volunteer at Old Dog Haven, picked them up at the shelter and drove them to the vet's office. The dogs were horribly stressed and she had to break up a squabble in the car, which couldn't have been easy.
Michelle, a great friend and extension of Happy Tails, was to pick them up and meet us in Cle Elum where Dwight and I would transfer them and bring them home. Sounds, easy, right?
Never quite as easy as it sounds. While trying to load them, Doc & Dino had more words and slobbering with each other, I'm sure Michelle must have made an impression on everyone at the vet's office!
Someone was kind enough to go home and get a crate for one of them. Helped Michelle load them and we met on a horrible, rainy day. Our mistake was unloading them to go potty and having to stand in the rain for over an hour while we kept them apart, yet tried to convince one of them to load into the crate.
Finally, we got one in, and don't even remember who it was.
Since Doc & Dino had lived together, we had juggled to clear one kennel area for both of them. Clearly that changed our plans at the last instant.
We can't just toss dogs together and hope that they'll get along, often they don't and there could be seroius injuries. Thankfully, we've avoided that by being ultra careful.
So, we're home, tired, wet, hungry, with 2 petrified dogs that can't live together. We had already juggled outside to free up a kennel and had no choice, someone that was outside was coming inside. And he would have to get along with our inside, mismatched crew of 6!
We chose Caesar to come inside, he had only been with us about 2 weeks and was still limping badly. We didn't like the limp, we never do. This isn't about Caesar or his story, so suffice to say that Caesar came inside that night and became permanent.
Sadly, he only lived 6 more months, he already had advanced osteosarcoma when his owner surrendered this 5.5 year old gentle guy.
It took Doc and Dino a couple of months to stabilize, start to gain some much needed weight and not be petrified. They finally came around, and Doc is living with his super family in Portland, his mom is holistic and teaches Pranic healing.
And that is a day in the life of Happy Tails Rescue.
