Today, while reading this Newsletter, the content will either be accepted because it's familiar and within your realm of possibilities or rejected as being a bit too far from the mainstream and comfortable beliefs; or perhaps marked for further research because it represents something new or with a slightly different twist.   The next several Newsletters will present some information that is contrary to the dominant society's popular belief systems.    There will be a broad spectrum of hot topics, including Soy based products, Aspartame and artificial sweeteners, Canola oil, High Fructose Corn Syrup, The Breast Cancer Industry, Cow milks, MSG, butter vs margarine, fluoride, vaccines, global warming and lots of other sizzling subjects that directly impact all aspects of our health and that of our beloved four legged family members.

If we are to be proficient truth seekers, how do we find the truth?   How can we believe anything?   How do we know what to believe and what to dismiss?   How are we able to separate fact from fiction or fact from self serving agendas or from out right misrepresentations?   How do we trust the person or media who is telling us something?   Are they telling us what they want us to believe or are they providing information in order for us to make our own decisions?   How do we make a judgment on what is really going on?   Are our opinions bought and paid for or are they formed after diligent independent research?   Are our opinions based on vivid visual imagery or on long hours of research, which is easier and which has a higher probability of accuracy?

Today, finding any truth is easier than ever, there are no important secrets floating around out there that don't eventually have a thread to the Internet.   Everything is at our finger tips....there is literally access to every major university in the world, the worlds libraries & newspapers, wire services, classes, product availability, medical information, organic government documents, hearings, court rulings, police reports, legislation, speeches, entire books not even to mention all of the special interest groups, Blogs and the plethora of other interesting things that occupy busy minds and quick fingers.   That isn't to imply that if it's online it's a sacred truth, no more so than any other form of media.   The Internet is simply an amazing tool we can use to sift through enormous quantities of information that makes research so much quicker and easier than trudging off to the library or writing for copies of original documents on critical resources.   Things that used to take days and weeks pouring through libraries now can be accessed in minutes.

Sixty years of television has changed this country and the world, it's an invited guest into most of our homes, it serves as a baby sitter, it fills the silence of an empty room, it enables busy lives to be entertained 24/7, it helps people unwind after long commutes, it shows the latest fashions world wide, provides weather and news-lite.   Many believe that watching TV is a harmless, entertaining activity worthy of our attention, but there are some eye-opening things to consider.   The average American family watches about 5 hours daily.   Television is essentially a platform for elite advertisers and policy leaders, of the dominant society, to peddle their wares, and their ideas of what we should think, feel and buy.   By directly touching your emotions with a steady stream of images, our attentions from reality are diverted and we're focused on their message that they want us to accept as truth.

Every year the food and drug companies spend well over $50 billion on marketing messages to U.S. consumers, designed to influence our food and medical choices.   The majority  (75 percent)  of commercial network television time is paid for by the 100 largest corporations  (chemical & pharmaceuticals are the big boys )  in North America.   Some of these companies even have budgets in the billions, and not surprisingly these budgets have the power to influence TV producers to create television that suits their agendas, and frequently, these agendas are not aligned with our best interests.   Watching highly emotional and dramatic programs affect our brains chemistry and puts us in an emotionally receptive state, thereby shutting off our logical process.   Pictures truly paint thousands of words and are carefully selected and chosen for the desired message and impact.  You might be surprised how many politicians and high profile personalities use Neuro Linguistic Programing as an unfair advantage to ensure you will be captivated by their every word.  If you find yourself mesmerized by someone being  "a great speaker" start paying closer attention to the frequency of their hand movements, the short four to five word sentences followed by a pause, the gesturing to someone perceived as important such as JFK, and then bringing their hands to themselves to form a mental association, watch the body language, the rhythm of the message.  NLP is designed to unfairly influence people, much like mass hypnosis.

When I hear people from diverse backgrounds using the same slang or speaking the same few lines, or mentioning the same conclusions on limited hot topics, I know the statistical probability of their opinions being identically formed is not realistic and it wasn't after independent research, but was formulated courtesy of social engineering via conventional media resources such as television, Hollywood or corporate newspapers.

My opinions are no greater or less than anyone else, they are equal to the highest voice of the land, and equal to the person without voice.   Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and any differences in opinion become a moral issue only when the information for the basis of your opinion has been manipulated, and if you were given different facts, would your opinion change and be more aligned with your true core values and beliefs?    As an adult I've rejected television, and am not even connected.   I did not watch it growing up, so my opinions are formed without the benefit of advertising sponsorship, but only after exhaustive research and are offered not to divide us or even to argue; but only to inspire anyone who has perhaps not considered how different the conclusions can be when all sides are considered and when the media is ignored.

Let's celebrate our similarities and let no one have tyranny over our minds!


Berries and Brightly Colored Fruits Top the Antioxidant Chart  ~

A team of Cornell University scientists subjected 25 fruits to a series of tests of antioxidant content and cellular activity.    Wild and domesticated blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, strawberries, and pomegranates topped the various lists in varying orders.   All brightly colored fruits scored very well in all measures used in the study.  Across all fruits in the diet, apples were found to provide 33% of total phenolics, reflecting very high consumption and moderate phenolics content.  Oranges provided 12%, grapes 12.8%, and strawberries, 9.8%.

In urging increased consumption of nutrient-dense, brightly colored fruits and vegetables, the team cited the latest report from the USDA's Economic Research Service on fruit and vegetable intakes.   The ERS reports that Americans are still lagging in terms of fruit and vegetable intake.    On average in 2005, we consumed 0.9 cups of fruit per day, instead of the 2.0 cups  (four servings)  recommending in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.    And we consumed 1.7 cups of vegetables, instead of the recommended 2.5 cups  (five servings), based on a 2,000 calorie diet.  The authors conclude  (cautiously)  that  "Antioxidant activity provided by fruits may be important in the prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases."  Source:  Kelly L. As delicious as fresh berries are, is there something with even higher anti oxident properties?   Happy Tails fully agrees in gobbling up as much bright colored, in season, fresh, organic fruit as possible, and making sure your pooches learn to enjoy them just as much as you do.   But what about when they are not in season and are cost prohibitive?   One wonderful food we turn to is Chaga.   Chaga   ( Inonotus Obliquus )  ~ Chaga Is one of natures oldest medicinal herbs.   Indigenous people have documented use of Chaga for 4,600 years and it's also considered a sacred native American herb which causes up to 4,000% modulation of white blood and other T killer cells within about 20 hours after ingestion.   For centuries, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners have used Chaga for general health, to arrest tumor growth, enhance longevity and natural beauty.   Russians have used it to boost the body's immune system, combat viral, bacterial, anti-inflammatory disorders, for treatment of stomach ulcers, to remove edemas, fight tuberculosis, reversal of tumor growth, metastasis prevention, treatment of diabetes, detoxification, influenza, treat liver dysfunction, combat fungal & parasitic disorders.    It can be used internally, taken in herbal tincture form or made into hot or cold tea, used externally or inhaled from smoke.

Chaga belongs to the group of medicinal mushroom that are  "adaptogenic.".... Adaptogens normalizes bodily functions, raising low levels up to normal, or lowering high levels down to normal.   The word Chaga derives from indigenous languages which are spoken around the entire Arctic Circle.   The Nez Perce used it in pemmican and were immune to diseases suffered by Europeans.    After close inspection, physicians attributed the herbs that the Indians were ingesting to their heightened immunity.    These herbs included Tiaga or Tsi Aga,  (Chaga)  which builds and strengthens the immune system.  Chaga is a Mushroom that commonly grows in northern regions on birch, alder and beech trees.    Wild naturally growing Chaga is very rare and very valuable.    Chaga is hard to find in the woods and difficult to procure commercially.    Chaga is considered a black parasitic shelf fungus found on living trunks of mature birch trees in colder climates and resembles burnt charcoal.    Chaga draws it's nutrients out of the living trees rather than from the ground.    Fungi digest food outside of their bodies by releasing enzymes into the surrounding environment, breaking down organic matter into a form the fungus can absorbs.    It causes the tree's death in 5-7 years, and in fact, Chaga Mushroom is called  "birch cancer"  in Russia.    The shape of the mushroom also resembles that of cancer in the human body.   After Chaga is harvested, the birch tree withers and dies.   Due to pollination of its seeds, a next generation is ready for harvest 20 years later.   Siberian species grow best in extreme winter conditions below minus 40 deg C at least 4-5 months per year.   The extreme nature of the Siberian winters appear to be the environmental quality that yields premium Siberian Chaga mushrooms high in anti-oxidant value.

Nobel Laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn  (the Russian author of Gulag Archipelago )   was impressed with the healing powers of Chaga to treat cancer.   During his 1950's investigative research in Siberian hospitals he wrote from personal experience in his Pulitzer Prize winning book The Cancer Ward.    " He could not imagine any greater joy than to go away into the woods for months on end, to break off this chaga, crumble it, boil it up on a campfire, drink it and get well like an animal."    Told that he had terminal cancer, Solchenitsyn claims to have defeated his cancer by sneaking Chaga into the cancer ward.  Chaga is well known for stimulating the immune system and its powerful anti-tumor activity, and was approved in 1955 by The Medical Academy of Science in Moscow for public use against cancer.   Chaga enjoys a long history of anti-cancer use in the Eastern Hemisphere and throughout the world.    Today, Chaga tea is commonly used in Russia as a kitchen remedy to support a healthy immune system.    Chaga is approved for  "food"  use by the FDA.   Siberian Chaga, unlike the other medicinal mushrooms has an exceptional amount of beta glucans, saponins, amino acids and contains large amounts of Betulinic Acid in a form that can be ingested orally, and it also contains the full spectrum of immune - stimulating phytochemicals found in other medicinal mushrooms.   Chaga also has a very high   "SOD"   (Super Oxide Dismutase)  content.  SOD is an extremely potent antioxidant enzyme that fights cellular damage from reactive singlet oxygen molecules, also known as free radicals.

The Awful Truth About Eating Grain$ Written by Dr. Del Thiessen and sent by Barbara Kravets

At the University of Minnesota, epidemiologist David R. Jacobs has found that those who ate whole-grain products daily had about a 15 percent to 25 percent reduction in death from all causes, including heart disease and cancer  (The Washington Post: 8-4-99).   This finding is in keeping with guidelines by the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, who would all like to see an increased consumption of whole-grain foods to at least three servings per day.   Current dietary guidelines recommend that consumers eat six to 11 servings of grain products daily, including at least three whole-grain foods.   A draft of health goals published by the Department of Health and Human Services calls for 75 percent of Americans to meet this intake by the year 2010.

The fact is that most Americans fall short of those goals, with only 7 percent eating three or more whole-grain foods daily, according to the latest U.S. department of Agriculture consumption figures.   Whole-grain foods contain higher amounts of fiber.   But research suggests that it's the whole-grain that delivers abundant amounts of antioxidant vitamins and phytochemicals that appear to act together to provide protective effects.   Now the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is allowing whole-grain products to carry a new health claim that touts their potential to help reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer.   Under the new claim, foods that contain 51 percent or more of whole-grain ingredients by weight may say on their labels  "Diets rich in whole-grain foods and other plant foods and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers."   Whole Grain Total and Wheaties are just two cereals that fall in this category.   Look for more of this type of advertising on whole-grain products.

The Other Side Of The Story   Very few people know that there are strong arguments against eating a lot of whole-grain products, and that researchers don't agree on their value.   Those interested in a natural  "Darwinian"  diet may be in the minority, still, the arguments are strong that whole-grain products may have their health costs.   One individual who has researched this problem extensively is Dr. Loren Cordain, Professor of Exercise Physiology at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, Colorado, 80523.   Dr. Cordain is a well-known expert in the area of Paleolithic nutrition.

Building The Evidence   Approximately 17 plants species provides 90 percent of the world's food supply.   The top 10 are:   wheat, maize, rice, barley, soybean, cane sugar, sorghum, potato, oats, and cassava.   Without these plants there is no way that the world could support the existing 6 billion people and the anticipated 12 to 15 billion people expected during the next century.   If agriculture gave us anything, it was an easily grown mass diet that was calorically dense that could be stored, shipped, and processed in hundreds of different ways.

Around 20,000 to 10,000 years ago there was a mass extinction of large mammals throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.   The environment was exploited until other forms of hunting and gathering was demanded.   Birds and waterfowl appeared more frequently in the fossil record, and for the first time grindstones and crude mortars appeared in the archaeological record in the near east.   This was the beginning of humanity's use of cereal grains for food.  Hunters and gatherers derived most of their calories from about 100-200 different species of wild animal fruits and vegetables.   But with the advent of agriculture, man became dependent upon a few staple cereal foods, 3-5 domesticated meat species, and 15-20 other plant foods.   Many populations got up to 80 percent of their calories from a single cereal staple.   This was the turning point in human evolution.   We abandoned the typical hunter-gatherer lifestyle, with its dependence on wild meat, fruits, vegetables, and nuts and took up dietary and activity patterns that were entirely new to us.   We had evolved to adapt to the life of hunters and gatherers and now accepted a life that was incompatible with our adaptive qualities.   The consequences were evident in a reduction in body size, from which we have only recently recovered, and in the appearance of diseases of sedentary and agricultural populations, such as cardiovascular disease, cancers, diabetes, high blood pressure, and bone diseases.   Many of our current problems can be blamed on our current nutritional and activity differences from our early hunter-gatherer existence.   Agriculture may have launched civilizations, with all their advantages, but it also led to disease, wars, and a restructuring of social organizations.   This is why Dr. Cordain refers to the development of agriculture as a two-edge sword.

So What's The Problem With Cereal Grains?  All grains have nutritional deficiencies.   Moreover, as we eat more and more grain products we tend to eliminate other nutritional meats, fruits, and vegetables.   In half the world, bread provides more than 50 percent of the total caloric intake, and in a few countries of Southern Asia, Central America and the Far East and Africa cereal products comprise up to 80 percent or more of the total caloric intake.   Think about your own intake of grain products.   In a month's time, most of us will have eaten several slices of bread, several bowls of cereal with milk, pasta, rice, bagels, rolls, muffins, crackers, cookies, pastries, corn or other forms of chips, and tortillas.   Most of these are refined and lack many important nutrients.   Cereal grains contain undetectable amounts of vitamin C, B12, carotenoids, and other vitamins and minerals, and they tend to displace foods rich in these substances that are associated with a decreased risk of heart disease and many forms of common cancers.   Moreover, cereal grains may actually inhibit the metabolism of these nutrients and cause autoimmune reactions.

Essential Fatty Acids  (EFA)  Increased consumption of n-3 fatty acids  (omega-3 acids), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid  (EPA)  decreases triglycerides, decreases thrombotic tendencies, and reduces symptoms of many inflammatory and autoimmune diseases including arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.   In addition, n-3 fatty acids are associated with reduced mortality from coronary heart disease.   N-3 fatty acids are found in meat and especially oily fish.  Cereal grains are low in fats, including the omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and docasahexaenoic acid  (DHA).   Vegetarian diets based primarily upon cereals, legumes, and plant products have a high n-6 (omega-6) to n-3 ratio.   Infants deprived of DHA show both visual and neural cortical abnormalities.   In pregnant women with low DHA levels, duration of gestation is about 5.6 days shorter than for meat-eating controls.   In these women emergency cesarean section were more common, and birth weight, head circumference, and body length were lower in the infants born to the vegetarian women.   Dr. Cordain concludes from these studies that, "Human dietary lipid requirements were shaped eons ago, long before the agricultural revolution, and long before humanity's adoption of cereal grains as staple foods.   Hence, the lipid composition of diets based upon cereal grains, legumes, vegetable oils and other plant products is vastly at odds with that found in wild game meat and organs, the primary, evolutionary source of lipids to which the human genetic constitution is optimally adapted."

What All Of This Means For You  If you have digestive problems or suffer some of the classic autoimmune reactions  (e.g. allergies)  consider the possibilities that grains may be problematical.   Look at your family members and your family history for clues about dietary problems.   Adjust the ratio of cereal grains to meat, vegetables, and fruits and see if the adjustment has physiological and psychological effects.   In my opinion one should supplement with vitamins, minerals, protein, and free fatty acids.   Above all, eat a varied diet and not too much of one thing.   And, finally, exercise regularly and with vigor.   Put it all together and you have the  "Darwinian"  diet and exercise program.


Coconut Oil & Its Virtues By Ray Peat, PhD Excerpted from the book From PMS to Menopause ~ 

I have discussed the many toxic effects of unsaturated oils, and I have frequently mentioned that coconut oil doesn't have those toxic effects, though it does contain a small amount of the unsaturated oils.    Many people have asked me to write something on coconut oil.    I thought I might write a small book on it, but I realize that there are no suitable channels for distributing such a book.    If the seed-oil industry can eliminate major corporate food products that have used coconut oil for a hundred years, they certainly have the power to prevent dealers from selling a book that would affect their market more seriously.    For the present, I will just outline some of the virtues of coconut oil.  When Albert Schweitzer operated his clinic in tropical Africa, he said it was many years before he saw any cases of cancer, and he believed that the appearance of cancer was caused by the change to the European type of diet.    In the 1920s, German researchers showed that mice on a fat-free diet were practically free of cancer.    Since then, many studies have demonstrated a very close association between consumption of unsaturated oils and the incidence of cancer.

Heart damage is easily produced in animals by feeding them linoleic acid;  this  "essential"  fatty acid turned out to be the heart toxin in  rape-seed oil (Canola oil .    The addition of saturated fat to the experimental heart-toxic, oil-rich diet protects against the damage to heart cells.

In the 1940s, farmers attempted to use cheap coconut oil for fattening their animals, but they found that it made them lean, active, and hungry.    For a few years, an anti-thyroid drug was found to make the livestock get fat while eating less food, but then it was found to be a strong carcinogen, and it also probably produced hypothyroidism in the people who ate the meat.    By the late 1940s, it was found that the same anti-thyroid effect, causing animals to get fat without eating much food, could be achieved by using soy beans and corn as feed.  As far as the evidence goes, it suggests that coconut oil, added regularly to a balanced diet, lowers cholesterol to normal by promoting its conversion into pregnenolone.    The coconut family contains steroids that resemble pregnenolone, but these are probably mostly removed when the fresh oil is washed with water to remove the enzymes which would digest the oil.    Coconut-eating cultures in the tropics have consistently lower cholesterol than people in the U.S.    Everyone that I know who uses coconut oil regularly happens to have cholesterol levels of about 160, while eating mainly cholesterol rich foods such as eggs, milk, cheese, meat, shellfish.    I encourage people to eat sweet fruits, rather than starches, if they want to increase their production of cholesterol, since fructose has that effect.

Although I had stopped using the unsaturated seed oils years ago, and supposed that I wasn't heavily saturated with toxic unsaturated fat, when I first used coconut oil I saw an immediate response, that convinced me my metabolism was chronically inhibited by something that was easily alleviated by  "dilution"  or molecular competition.    I had put a tablespoonful of coconut oil on some rice I had for supper, and half an hour later while I was reading, I noticed I was breathing more deeply than normal.    I saw that my skin was pink, and I found that my pulse was faster than normal...about 98, 1 think.    After an hour or two, my pulse and breathing returned to normal.    Every day for a couple of weeks I noticed the same response while I was digesting a small amount of coconut oil, but gradually it didn't happen any more, and I increased my daily consumption of the oil to about an ounce.    I kept eating the same foods as before  (including a quart of ice cream every day),  except that I added about 200 or 250 calories per day as coconut oil.    Apparently the metabolic surges that happened at first were an indication that my body was compensating for an anti-thyroid substance by producing more thyroid hormone;  when the coconut oil relieved the inhibition, I experienced a moment of slight hyperthyroidism, but after a time the inhibitor became less effective, and my body adjusted by producing slightly less thyroid hormone.    But over the next few months, I saw that my weight was slowly and consistently decreasing.    It had been steady at 185 pounds for 25 years, but over a period of six months it dropped to about 175 pounds.    I found that eating more coconut oil lowered my weight another few pounds, and eating less caused it to increase.

  Raw Foodists Arrested for Trafficking Chocolate; Interrogated for  "Cacao Crimes"

When Ron and Nadine from the    Living Libations beauty care and chocolate company attempted to fly to the United States in August of this year, they ran into something completely unexpected:   Drug-sniffing dogs at the Toronto airport.   When their dogs took a special interest in their raw, unrefined chocolate with hemp seeds and superfood extracts, they were arrested, handcuffed and put through hours of tortuous interrogation.   Such begins the journey of Ron and Nadine, the chocolate freedom fighters from Canada.

People around the world pro-actively reject Genetically Modified  (GM)  products and crops.   But in the United States, few people are even aware of what GM foods are -- and labeling is not required.  Yet some 70% of the foods in your grocery store contain GM foods.

Genetically Engineered Foods -- A Source of Rising Food Allergies?  The huge jump in childhood food allergies in the US is in the news often.   But most reports fail to consider a link to a recent radical change in America‘s diet.   Beginning in 1996, bacteria, virus and other genes have been artificially inserted to the DNA of soy, corn, cottonseed and canola plants.  These unlabeled genetically modified  (GM)  foods carry a risk of triggering life threatening allergic reactions.

Evidence collected over the past decade now suggests that they are contributing to higher allergy rates.    Scientists have long known that GM crops might cause allergies, but there are no tests to prove in advance that a GM crop is safe.   That‘s because people aren‘t usually allergic to a food until they have eaten it several times. "The only definitive test for allergies,"  according to former FDA microbiologist Louis Pribyl, "is human consumption by affected peoples, which can have ethical considerations."   And it is the ethical considerations of feeding unlabeled, high-risk GM crops to unknowing consumers that have many people up in arms.

UK Experiences Alarming Rise in Soy-Related Food Allergies  The UK is one of the few countries conducting a yearly evaluation of food allergies.   In March 1999, researchers at the York Laboratory were alarmed to discover that reactions to soy have skyrocketed by 50% over the previous year.  Genetically modified soy had recently entered the UK from U.S. imports.   So the soy used in the study was largely GM.   John Graham, spokesman for the York laboratory, said,  "We believe this raises serious new questions about the safety of GM foods."

Critics of GM foods often say that the U.S. population is being used as guinea pigs in an experiment.   But experiments have the benefit of controls and measurement.   In this case, there is neither.   GM food safety experts point out that even if someone tried to collect data about allergic reactions to GM foods, they would likely be unsuccessful.   "The potential allergen is rarely identified.   The number of allergy related medical visits is not tabulated.   Even repeated visits due to well known allergens are not counted as part of any established surveillance system.

What If Bizarre Genes Start Transferring To Humans ...  If this protein in GM soybeans is causing allergies, then the situation may be made much worse by something called horizontal gene transfer  (HGT).   That‘s when genes spontaneously transfer from one species' DNA to another.   While this happens often among bacteria, it is rare in plants and mammals.   But the method used to construct and insert foreign genes into GM crops eliminates many of the natural barriers that stop HGT from occurring.   The only published human feeding study on GM foods ever conducted on GM foods showed that parts of the gene inserted into GM soy ended up transferring into the DNA of human gut bacteria.   Furthermore, the gene was stably integrated and it appeared to be producing its potentially allergenic protein.   So, years after people stop eating GM soy, they may still be exposed to its risky protein, which is being continuously produced within their own intestines.

Genetic Engineering:   An Exact Science... Or A Mutation Disaster Waiting To Happen?  Eating More Herbicides In The Name Of  "Progress"  By 2004, farmers used an estimated 86% more herbicide on GM soy fields compared to non-GM.   Higher levels of herbicide residue in GM soy might cause health problems.   In fact, many symptoms identified in the UK soy allergy study are also related to glyphosate exposure.  The allergy study identified irritable bowel syndrome, digestion problems, chronic fatigue, headaches, lethargy, and skin complaints including acne and eczema, all related to soy consumption.   Symptoms of glyphosate exposure include nausea, headaches, lethargy, skin rashes, and burning or itchy skin.   It is also possible that glyphosate‘s breakdown product AMPA, which accumulates in GM soybeans after each spray, might contribute to allergies.

Gambling With Our Health -- For Their Profits  Introducing genetically engineered foods into our diet was done quietly and without the mandatory labeling that is required in most other industrialized countries.   Without knowing that GM foods might increase the risk of allergies or which foods contain GM ingredients, the biotech industry is gambling with our health for their profit.   This risk is not lost on everyone.   In fact, millions of shoppers are now seeking foods that are free from any GM ingredients.   Ohio based allergy specialist John Boyles, MD, says,  "I used to test for soy allergies all the time, but now that soy is genetically engineered, it is so dangerous that I tell people never to eat it -- unless it says organic.  "Organic foods are not allowed to contain GM ingredients.  Buying products that are certified organic or that say non GMO are two ways to limit your family's risk from GM foods.   Another is to avoid products containing any ingredients from the  seven food crops  that have been genetically engineered:   soy, corn, cottonseed, canola, Hawaiian papaya and a little bit of zucchini and crook neck squash.   This means avoiding soy lecithin in chocolate, corn syrup in candies, and cottonseed or

"Tofu Shrinks Brain!   " No science fiction scenario, this sobering soybean revelation is for real.   But how did the  "poster bean"  of the '90s go wrong?   Apparently, in many ways, none of which bode well for the brain.

In a major ongoing study involving 3,734 elderly Japanese-American men, those who ate the most tofu during midlife had up to 2.4 times the risk of later developing Alzheimer’s disease.   As part of the three-decade long Honolulu Asia Aging Study, 27 foods and drinks were correlated with participants’ health.   Men who consumed tofu at least twice weekly had more cognitive impairment than those who rarely or never ate the soybean curd.


  In My Opinion, all Soy products should carry a warning label.   The scientific and medical studies that have shown the dangers of using Soy in our diet are truly shocking.  3 year old girls with pubic hair and breats after having Soy formula.   Now that's damn wrong!


    Soy Lecithin:   From Sludge to Profit By Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD, CCN

Lecithin is an emulsifying substance that is found in the cells of all living organisms.   The French scientist Maurice Gobley discovered lecithin in 1805 and named it  "lekithos"  after the Greek word for  "egg yolk."   Until it was recovered from the waste products of soybean processing in the 1930s, eggs were the primary source of commercial lecithin.   Today lecithin is the generic name given to a whole class of fat and water soluble compounds called phospholipids.   Levels of phospholipids in soybean oils range from 1.48 to 3.08 percent, which is considerably higher than the 0.5 percent typically found in vegetable oils, but far less than the 30 percent found in egg yolks.

OUT OF THE DUMPS   Soybean lecithin comes from sludge left after crude soy oil goes through a  "degumming" process.   It is a waste product containing  solvents and pesticides  and has a consistency ranging from a gummy fluid to a plastic solid.   Before being bleached to a more appealing light yellow, the color of lecithin ranges from a dirty tan to reddish brown.   The hexane extraction process commonly used in soybean oil manufacture today yields less lecithin than the older ethanol-benzol process, but produces a more marketable lecithin with better color, reduced odor and less bitter flavor.   Historian William Shurtleff reports that the expansion of the soybean crushing and soy oil refining industries in Europe after 1908 led to a problem disposing the increasing amounts of fermenting, foul-smelling sludge.   German companies then decided to vacuum dry the sludge, patent the process and sell it as  "soybean lecithin."   Scientists hired to find some use for the substance cooked up more than a thousand new uses by 1939.

  Weston Price Soy Statement  The possible drawbacks of soy foods...a controversial topic among vegetarians, I know!   Modern soy foods are frequently not prepared in such a way as to neutralize many anti-nutritive qualities.   Soybeans contain very high levels of the aforementioned phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, and also contain high levels of phytoestrogens (isoflavones).   These substances, far from being the panacea that they are claimed to be, are potent endocrine disrupters and goitrogens--substances which depress the thyroid.   Once again, heat does not neutralize these substances…nor does sprouting in the case of the soybean.   The only way to neutralize all of the difficulties with soybeans and truly unlock their nutritional value is to ferment them by ancient traditional methods into tempeh, miso, natto or traditional soy sauces such as shoyu and tamari.   The Price Foundation strongly recommends reconsidering the decision to consume soy in any other form, which means avoiding tofu, texturized or hydrolyzed vegetable protein  (TVP or HVP),  soy protein powder, soy protein isolate, soy lecithin, soy nuts, soy nut butters, soy cooking oil, soy milk and other soy  "dairy"  products, and imitation soy  "meat"  products of all kinds.


Actual Complaints About Soy

"I've been medicated for hypothyroidism for 27 years now and I've just gone into menopause.   Over the years, because of being under medicated for thyroid disease, I gained a great deal of weight--nearly 100 pounds; despite eating what I thought was a healthy diet.   My doctor put me on the American Heart Association diet in efforts to lower cholesterol  (which, incidentally, is a sign of insufficient thyroid hormones)  and to lose weight.   This diet allowed virtually no cholesterol from foods and had a high carbohydrate content compared with the low protein and low fat.   I didn't eat an egg for 5 years!   Despite my efforts of counting calories, cutting out as much fat as possible and exercising, I gained weight!   I couldn't believe it because I had been so careful on the prescribed diet.  I felt I was on the road to good health.   Not so, for I began to substitute soy protein in the form of tofu, soy milk, soy powder, soy  "nutrition" bars, tempeh, soy burgers, soy sausage and so on.   Unbeknownst to me, soy interferes with thyroid hormone absorption and utilization.   For three years I foolishly ate more and more soy products, thinking I was doing something good for myself, convinced by not only the media hype about soy but with my doctor's blessing.   I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia along with my autoimmune thyroid disease."

Hypothyroidism causes a slowing of the metabolism and the symptoms include weight gain, exhaustion with exercise, painful muscles, digestive problems  (constipation),  hair loss, excess sleep needs, loss of libido, and much more.   I was miserable!   An article by Mary Shomon at the Thyroid Disease website pointed out that soy was evil for thyroid patients!   As soon as I tossed out all the soy in my house, I gradually became better and more energetic.  It is amazing to me that the American Heart Association diet not only tells patients to cut out as much fat as possible but to eat soy to reduce cholesterol.   This is counterproductive because soy products can cause hypothyroidism, which makes cholesterol levels rise!   They also stress lots of carbohydrates like pasta and high glycemic foods, which in reality cause insulin resistance and excess carbs are stored as fat.   No wonder I gained weight on that diet!   In fact, when I was on that diet I had symptoms of diabetes.

Most disturbing, my mental acuity was lost, I had mental confusion and decreased word retrieval.   My hair was falling out, my skin dry and cracked, my fingernails and hair barely grew at all.   I was often found lost somewhere in space while the world continued on without me.   My digestive system was a mess and my body temperature was often below 97°F.   I was so cold at times I had to jump in a hot shower just to raise my body temperature to normal.   Living like this can only be described as a fate worse than death at times.  All this was due to soy consumption.

Not only did the soy affect my thyroid, it also affected my digestion and brain function!   I developed cognitive problems and had difficulty spelling and figuring out basic problems that before had never been a challenge.   My memory was steadily going downhill, which at age 45 was a scary prospect, especially since my dad has Alzheimer's disease.   As the result of my illness I decided to leave my job.

Many people apply for disability as the result of fibromyalgia.   Through prayer and two years of research I am fortunate to be 95 percent symptom-free, part of which is due to avoiding soy products.


  Another Look At Milk  

What then about dairy products?   A few studies have linked modern commercial milk products with serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes and arthritis; but natural milk products have a long history of conferring good health in many parts of the globe.   Dr. Weston Price, a pioneer in the science of nutrition, studied isolated population groups during the 1930's.   He found that milk products were the principal food of many supremely healthy populations including isolated villagers in the Swiss Alps, the Masai and related tribes in Africa, and Arabic peoples in the Middle East.  Of the three areas in the world noted for the longevity of the local population -the Caucasus Mountains in Russia, the village of Vilcabamba in Ecuador and the land of the Hunza in northern India- all three use whole milk products.   The people of Hunza and Kashmir consume whole fermented goat milk products; inhabitants of Vilcabamba consume raw cows milk which they usually separate into cream cheese and whey; and the centenarians of the Caucasus Mountains eat whole milk yogurt and other dairy products.

Milk products form the backbone of the Hindu diet, with clarified butter  (ghee)  and fermented curds eaten with every meal.   "The cows are our friends, they give food, they give strength, they likewise give a good complexion and happiness,"   said Gautama Buddha.   While the Japanese have the longest life span of the civilized world on a diet containing few milk products, the Swiss are a close second in the longevity stakes with a diet just loaded with rich milk products like butter, cream and cheese.   Tied for third and fourth are the Austrians and the Greeks.   Both these populations consume whole milk products, especially cheese.   Milk products are even found in some parts of the Orient, from water buffalo milk in Southeast Asia to cows milk in northern China.   The longest living man in the West was Old Par, an English peasant who labored in the fields until his death at 152 years.   His diet consisted almost entirely of  raw goat milk  products-milk, cheese and whey.

Processing Is the Problem The path that transforms healthy milk products into allergens and carcinogens begins with modern feeding methods that substitute high-protein, soy-based feeds for fresh green grass; and breeding methods to produce cows with abnormally large pituitary glands so that they produce three times more milk than the old fashioned scrub cow.   These cows need antibiotics to keep them well.   Their milk is then pasteurized so that all valuable enzymes are destroyed lactase for the assimilation of lactose; galactase for the assimilation of galactose; phosphatase for the assimilation of calcium.   Literally dozens of precious enzymes are destroyed in the pasteurization process.   Without them milk is very difficult to digest.   The human pancreas is not always able to produce these enzymes; overstress of the pancreas can lead to diabetes and other diseases.

Quality Dairy Products Are Available  Public health officials and the National Dairy Council have worked together in this country to make it very difficult to obtain wholesome fresh raw dairy products.   Nevertheless, they can be found with a little effort.   In some states you can buy raw milk directly from farmers.   Whole pasteurized non homogenized milk from cows raised on organic feed is now available in many gourmet shops and health food stores.   It can be cultured to restore enzyme content, at least partially.   Cultured buttermilk is often more easily digested than regular milk; it is an excellent product to use in baking.

Many shops now carry whole cream, that is merely pasteurized  (not ultra pasteurized like most commercial cream): diluted with water it is delicious on cereal and a good substitute for those allergic to milk.   Traditionally made creme fraiche, European style sour cream, also has a high enzyme content.   Fresh, organic yogurt made from whole milk according to traditional methods is also now available, as well as organic raw cheese.   Many imported cheeses are raw, look for the words  "milk"  or  "fresh milk"  on the label and are of very high quality.

Butter Is a Healthy Food   Organic, cultured butter is available in many stores.   It has restored enzymes and a high vitamin A content.   Contrary to widely held opinion, there is no evidence that butter contributes to heart disease or cancer.   At the turn of the century, butter consumption in America was 18 pounds per person per year.   Today it is a mere five pounds.   As butter consumption has plummeted, cancer and heart disease have risen dramatically.

The real blame for this increase points squarely at hydrogenated butter substitutes, such as margarine and shortening.    Butter contains many nutrients that protect us against disease.   Those with severe allergies to milk products can still eat clarified butter  (ghee)  and enjoy its good taste and numerous nutritional benefits.  In countries that traditionally produce milk, adults favor fermented products such as yogurt, clabber, buttermilk and soft and hard cheeses.   These are easier to digest because of enhanced enzyme content.   But fresh whole milk is easily digested by most children and is an appropriate food up to the age of three or four.   A child's toleration for milk will be much greater if it is raw.   If you have property in the country, consider raising scrub cows or goats in order to provide fresh raw milk for your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, there is no greater gift you can give them than the healthy start conferred by fresh whole raw milk.   Consumer beware.

Americans Go For The Real Things, Boycott counterfeits!

Back in the 1970s, a couple of blokes were sitting in an English pub, bemoaning the consolidation of the brewing industry in England and the decline of British beer and ale.   A commodity that represented the soul of Britain carefully brewed lagers from countless small scale manufacturers, each with a distinctive color and taste had been edged out by the insipid canned beers of a few large monopolistic breweries.   What was needed, they decided, was a return to traditional brewing methods.   They launched A Campaign for Real Ale, which soon became the force that turned back the mega brewers and reinstated varied and delicious ales to English tables and pubs.

Back in the 20s, Americans could buy fresh raw whole milk, real clabber and buttermilk, luscious naturally yellow butter, fresh farm cheeses and cream in various colors and thicknesses.   Today's milk is accused of causing everything from allergies to heart disease to cancer, but when Americans could buy Real Milk, these diseases were rare.   In fact, a supply of high quality dairy products was considered vital to American security and the economic well being of the nation.  What's needed today is a return to humane, non toxic, pasture based dairying and small scale traditional processing, in short, we need a whole food revolution!


Irradiating fresh produce    is a last ditch attempt by the FDA to make their supervision and certification of the crumbling food system appear safe.   This way, agribusiness can continue to grow and process spinach and lettuce in the filthiest conditions imaginable, and it will still be perfectly safe for you to eat it, thanks to the varying doses of radiation.

According to the Organic Consumers Association  (OCA):

"Bombardment of a food by ionizing radiation:  "gamma rays"  from nuclear material, x-rays or high-speed electrons from electronic guns.   They are used to kill bacteria in the food.   Electrons are knocked off molecules and ricochet around in the food.  They break up cell walls, slice and dice chromosomes, kill enzymes, and create free radicals  (oxygen atoms missing an electron).   These free radicals recombine to form stable compounds, or continue their destructive path.  Some of the compounds created are known to be cancer-causing  (formaldehyde, benzene, lipid peroxides).   Others have never been seen or studied before."

Still, the FDA maintains that irradiated foods are no different from non-irradiated foods  (which is not surprising considering they also consider meat from cloned animals the same as non-cloned meat).   Yet, right on their own Web site, they say,  "Irradiation can produce changes in food, similar to changes caused by cooking, but in smaller amounts."  What's wrong with irradiation

Science has not proved that a long-term diet of irradiated foods is safe for human health.

·  The longest human feeding study was 15 weeks.   No one knows the long-term effects of a life-long diet that includes foods which will be frequently irradiated, such as meat, chicken, vegetables, fruits, salads, sprouts and juices.

·  There are no studies on the effects of feeding babies or children diets containing irradiated foods, except a very small and controversial study from India that showed health effects.

·  Studies on animals fed irradiated foods have shown increased tumors, reproductive failures and kidney damage.   Some possible causes are:   irradiation-induced vitamin deficiencies, the inactivity of enzymes in the food, DNA damage, and toxic radiolytic products in the food.

Even with current labeling requirements, people cannot avoid eating irradiated food.   That means there is no control group, and epidemiologists will never be able to determine if irradiated food has any health effects.

Irradiation covers up problems that the meat and poultry industry should solve

·  Irradiation covers up the increased fecal contamination that results from speeded up slaughter and decreased federal inspection, both of which allow meat and poultry to be produced more cheaply.   Prodded by the industry, the USDA has allowed a transfer of inspection to company inspectors.   Where government inspectors remain, they are not allowed to condemn meat and poultry now that they condemned 20 years ago.

·  Because of this deregulation  (continued under President Clinton, a protégé of Tyson Foods),  the meat and poultry industry has recently lost money and suffered bad publicity from food-poisoning lawsuits and expensive product recalls.   Irradiation is a  "magic bullet"  that will enable them to say that the product was  "clean"  when it left the packing plant.   Irradiation, however, does not sterilize food, and any bacteria that remain can grow to toxic proportions if the food is not properly stored and handled.

·  In 2000, seven meat industry associations submitted a petition to USDA to redefine key regulations relating to contamination. If accepted by USDA, this petition would permit unlimited fecal contamination during production, as long as irradiation was used afterwards.

Electron-beam irradiation today means nuclear irradiation tomorrow.

·  The source of the irradiation is not listed on the label.

·  The original sponsor of food irradiation in the US was the Department of Energy, which wanted to create a favorable image of nuclear power as well as dispose of radioactive waste.   These goals have not changed.   Cobalt-60, which is used for irradiation, must be manufaactured in a nuclear reactor.

·  Many foods cannot be irradiated using electron beams.   E-beams only penetrate 1-1.5 inches on each side, and are suitable only for flat, evenly sized foods like patties.   Large fruits, foods in boxes, and irregularly shaped foods must be irradiated using x-rays or gamma rays from nuclear materials.

·  Countries that lack a cheap and reliable source of electricity for e-beams use nuclear materials.   Opening U.S. markets to irradiated food encourages the spread of nuclear irradiation worldwide.

·  Some bacteria, like the one that causes botulism, as well as viruses and prions (which are believed to cause Mad Cow Disease) are not killed by current doses of irradiation.
·  Irradiation encourages food producers to cut corners on sanitation, because they can  'clean up'  the food just before it is shipped.

Irradiation does nothing to change the way food is grown and produced.

·  Irradiated foods can have longer shelf lives than nonirradiated foods, which means they can be shipped further while appearing  'fresh.'   Food grown by giant farms far away may last longer than nonirradiated, locally grown food, even if it is inferior in nutrition and taste.   Thus, irradiation encourages centralization and hurts small farmers.

·  The use of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and other agrichemicals, as well as pollution and energy use, are not affected.   Irradiation is applied by the packer after harvest or slaughter.

·  Free-market economists say irradiation is  'efficient':  it provides the cheapest possible food for the least possible risk.   But these economists are not concerned about the impaired nutritional quality of the food.   They are not considering the environmental effects of large-scale corporate farming, the social costs of centralization of agriculture and loss of family farms, the replacement of unionized, impartial government inspectors with company inspectors , the potential long-term damage to human health, and the possibility of irradiation-resistant super-bacteria.   All of these developments should be  (but are not)  considered when regulators and public health officials evaluate the benefits of food irradiation.


Organic Crops   are not treated with synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.   Animals on organic farms are not given hormones and drugs to promote more rapid growth.   Genetically modified organisms are not used on any organic farms.  Organic farmers manage the natural cycles of the earth and animals.   Most combine crops and livestock to build better soil, have healthier animals, and prevent pests.   Organic food companies use production methods that keep the important vitamins, minerals, flavors, and antioxidants in organic food.

What Does My Choice To Eat Organic Mean?

Eliminate pesticides from 98 million daily U.S. servings of drinking water.

Assure 20 million daily servings of milk that are produced without antibiotics & genetically modified growth hormones.

Assure 53 million daily servings of pesticide-free fruit and vegetables.  (Enough for 10 million kids to have five daily servings.)

Eliminate use of growth hormones, genetically engineered drugs and feeds, and 2.5 million pounds of antibiotics used on livestock annually.   More than twice the amount of antibiotics used to treat human infections.

Assure that 915 million animals are treated more humanely.

Fight climate change by capturing an additional 6.5 billion pounds of carbon in soil.   That's the equivalent of taking 2 million cars, each averaging 12,000 miles per year, off the road.

Eliminate 2.9 billion barrels of imported oil annually.  Equal to 406,000 Olympic eight-lane competition pools.

Restore 25,800 square miles of degraded soils to rich, highly productive cropland.   An amount of land equal to the size of West Virginia.

Growing U.S. organic food sales to 10 percent by 2010, can improve our personal health by:

Lowering the incidence of neurodevelopmental problems in children, perhaps including ADHD and autism.   Abnormal neurodevelopment in children can be caused or made worse by pre-natal and early life exposures to pesticides and chemicals that contaminate our food.

Lowering the number of pre-term deliveries each year.   Prematurity is now an epidemic in the United States, affecting one in eight babies.   It is a leading cause of developmental problems, and death, in babies.

Virtually eliminating dietary exposures to insecticides known to be developmental neurotoxins, based on the compelling findings reported in two University of Washington studies involving school-age children.

Reducing unwanted interference with our sex hormones, which should reduce the prevalence of erectile dysfunction, the number of people suffering from loss of sexual drive, and reduce a host of estrogen-related health problems.


Life Expectancy Drops To 69.3 Years In The US (Reuters)

What is the average life expectancy of Americans?   For a long time it has been the low seventies for men and upper seventies for women.   So it comes as a shock to learn that the average life expectancy for Americans has dropped to 69.3 years, according to the America's Health Rankings report, issued at the American Public Health Association's annual meeting.  This figure is exceeded by 28 other countries, including Britain, France and Germany and is about five years less than the life expectancy in Japan.   According to Dr. Reed Tuckson, this dismal number reflects increasing obesity, fewer people quitting smoking  (although only 20.8 percent of Americans smoke today, down from almost one-third in 1990), and increasing numbers of people without health insurance.   Officials made no mention of the increasing consumption of processed foods containing refined sweeteners, processed vegetable oils and toxic additives, and certainly did not allow even a whisper about the almost complete absence of nutrient-dense foods such as organ meats, shellfish and butterfat and eggs from grass-fed animals from the American diet  (December 13, 2005).


    Not Too Late To Burn Your Bra!

If you didn't burn yours in the Sixties, you might want to put it away now.   "Bras cause breast cancer.   It's open and shut," says medical researcher Syd Singer.  The Singers became breast cancer sleuths in 1991.   On the day Soma discovered a lump in her breast, the husband-wife team was studying the effects of Western medicine on Fijians.  The World Health Organization calls chemical toxins the primary cause of cancer.   But poisons accumulating in breast tissue are normally flushed by clear lymph fluid into large clusters of lymph nodes nestling in the armpits and upper chest.   The Singers found that  "because lymphatic vessels are very thin, they are extremely sensitive to pressure and are easily compressed."   Chronic minimal pressure on the breasts can cause lymph valves and vessels to close.   "Less oxygen and fewer nutrients are delivered to the cells, while waste products are not flushed away," the Singers noted.

Brassieres.   One of the most suppressed and proven causal factors for developing breast cancer is due to your bra constricting the flow of lymphatic fluid in breast tissue.
In their book,  "Dressed To Kill:   The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras,"  authors Syd Singer and Soma Grismaijer found that the odds of getting breast cancer dramatically increased with bra-wearing over 12 hours per day.

• Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3-in-4 chance of developing breast cancer.
• Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1-in-7 risk.
• Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1-in-152 risk.
• Women who wore bras rarely or never had worn them experienced a 1-in-168 chance of getting breast cancer.
• The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference. Syd Singer says, "women should take their bras off before they take their breasts off."

After 15 or 20 years of bra-constricted lymph drainage, cancer can result.   Syd also submits that some 80% of bra-wearers who experience lumps, cysts and tenderness will see those symptoms vanish,  "within a month of getting rid of the bra."    Surgeon Christine Haycock at the New Jersey College of Medicine says that inherited traits - not ligaments or breast size - are the reason some breasts give in to gravity.   Bouncing bosoms help clear the lymphatics.  At the first frightening sign of a lump, an angry Syd Singer says,  "women should take their bras off before they take their breasts off."   Why wait, when you can liberate your lymphatics now?


Victory Garden Time Again?  More than 20 million home gardens were supplying up to 40% of the produce consumed by Americans as a result of the  "Victory Garden"  movement during World War II.  The USDA opposed President Roosevelt's decision to plant a White House garden and promote Victory Gardens, fearing that such a movement might hurt the American food industry.

  This year Happy Tails humans concluded that our domestic food supply is hopelessly adulterated and the powers that be clearly place their bottom lines in front of consumers health and wishes.   Our soils are so deplented that the fruits and veggies are almost without nutritional value, we find it unacceptable that the FDA's decision to allow bacteria to be sprayed on foods, without our knowledge or labels, is counter productive to good health, that many foods are now routinely irradiated, and again without our knowledge or labels, the FDA has determined, in spite of adamant consumer resistence that cloned meat is perfectly OK for us to eat, and the list goes on and on about the dismal state of our food supply, not even to mention the poor quality and lack of taste.

Because of these reasons and the cost of gas to ship foods across the world, the cost of fuel associated with production, the deliberate misrepresentation by corporations as to the true ingredients or solvents used to produce a food product, the increased use of GMO Frankenfoods, the dumbing down of USDA  "organic"  standards, the declining health of Americans, we deceided that we would grow a food production garden!  This was our first attempt ever at such an undertaking.   We knew that our soils were also depleted and hard as concrete in the summer.  Former test attempts at growing idiot proof veggies such as pumpkins or zucchini FAILED!

Using only natural, pesticide free, on site available materials we rebuilt a 50 x 50 ft section of soil.  We used our llama and horse manure, composted straw, red rock sand, bark & lime, no pesticides or any artifiical ingredients, tilled it, crossed tilled it and let it sit.

As the world enters into what many scientists predict is a global cooling period and possible mini ice age, we were still having freezing nights in June of 2008, so our garden wasn't planted until June 19, a very late start.  As this was an experiment we wanted only veggies known to be easy to grow and that we would watch and see what happened regarding invasive insects.

To give it a spiritual quality, the inspiration struck to include a 16' in diameter herbal medicine wheel design for the center of the garden, with paths leading in the four directions.   The planting rows were verticle to the east and west and 1/2 round rows to the north and south, great Feng Shui!  Everything was started from organic seed, we had a partial drip irrigation system that was poorly done due to lack of experience.   A modest amount of water was given daily, the garden was in full sun from early morning until late in the day, surrounded by a 4' picket fence.  Not to bore the experienced, true food producers out there, with every detail, the only invasive insects we had were grasshoppers, the only veggies they liked were the highly prolific mustard greens.  Long ago I created a natural breed inhibitor that will stop them, but as an experiment I did nothing to discourage them.  The grasshoppers fell as prey to the abundant and diverse bird population, who left the garden completely alone, which surprised me.

The flowering herbs of Lavender, Thyme, Oregano, Basil and the mustard drews lots of honey bees and bumble bees.   Late in October 2008, some were still flowering, in spite of below freezing nights, and some bees were still buzzing around.  The garden was a tremendous success, it was more than abundant, the soil is so loose that it could easily be worked with my bare hands, and the incredible, deep, rich, humus aroma is a pure earthly delight.   Everything was HUGE, our tomato vines reached lengths of 12 feet and dazzled us with hundreds of juicy, delicious fruits with some weighing over 1.5 lbs, we share with our dogs who love them.  Everything we planted was prolific, potatoes, zucchini, patty pan squash, pumpkins, turnips, beets, parsnips, carrots, cayenne pepper, tomatoes, mustard & collard greens, Swiss chard, sunflowers and more.  We started tarping the tomatoes at night when it was below freezing and we finally picked all of the green tomatoes (for freezing)   late October.  Combining the various veggies, the dogs are able to eat what we eat and they love roast vegetables and look forward to what's on the counter for dinner, they stop dead in their tracks with the fresh herbs, it's so good for them.  There is nothign better for the eyes than Mustard Greens which we included in many blender drinks.  The few weeds we had went straight to the chickens and goats who were very grateful!

It's hard to say how much money we saved on this experiment, but it was considerable.    We weren't driving to the store as frequently, hardly buying anything except some supplemental basics.  The best part is that everyone can enjoy some type of a food production garden, even in an apartment.   Potatoes can be grown on a small spot, many plants can be hung upside down and grown inside or on patios and porches, front lawns can become edible!  Let's vote with our dollars and feet and simply not buy poor quality, pesticide contaminated food.  There are many options to buy locally from small farms, local stands, family or friends if you don't feel like digging your hands in the soil.  We're looking forward to next season, moving the squash and pumpkins to areas that will serve as edible landscaping and we'll build some sort of contraption to get the tomatoes more under control and perhaps grow like grape vines!

Massage Oil for Mange and Mites

The perfect Ayurvedic treatment for pets and humans, when pests have ravaged the skin and/or fur.
Combine 1/2 ounce neem oil with 1/2 ounce karanja oil.
Whisk in 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder to make a paste.   You need not add the turmeric powder, but it will facilitate healing.   Bear in mind the turmeric is a dye and will stain.
Dilute the oil with up to 6 ounces of fixed oil.   We recommend a combination of jojoba and sweet almond oil for their compatibility with fur and skin.   Use more oil for smaller animals and people, less oil for larger.
Apply gently to affected areas.   Repeat 2-3 times daily.   Wash off with a natural shampoo.   Repeat as needed until skin is healed and fur has regrown.

Mange and Scabies Treatment Salve

Rub a small amount of this soothing salve onto affected areas.   Increase amount of shea oil for a thinner product.   Fine for use on people and pets.
1 oz. carnauba wax
2 oz. Olive butter or coconut
oil 3 oz. Shea oil
1 oz. karanja or neem oil or use 1/2 oz. each oil
20 drops tea tree oil and 30 drops lemon essential oil

Combine the first 4 ingredients and melt.   Add the essemtial oils to the melted mixture.
Test your salve by allowing drops to cool on a plate or spoon.   Adjust the hardness using wax or oil depending upon whether you want it harder or softer.
Pour into wide mouth containers.   Cool quickly to prevent crystal formation.
